We were asked to help with a client whose medical condition had recently deteriorated. Access to the house was via steps along a path which was did not provide wheelchair access.
We were asked to provide an urgent ramp solutions and we proposed a permanent ramp (concrete with a 1:15 gradient with three platforms and rails on both sides.
The existing concrete path and steps leading down from road to front door were cut out and the broken up concrete was disposed of. The existing galvanised handrail was removed. Using a mini digger, the area was dug out and levelled to allow for the required ramp to be formed.
A soakaway was dug at the midpoint of the ramp to aid with the removal of rain water.
Aqua drain gulleys were installed at the front door and midpoint.
Kerb edgings were concreted in place to form the safety upstands.
Entire area of new ramp was covered with type one hard core which was then compacted using a wacker plate.
The ramp and platforms were concreted in sections allowing for expansion joints.
The ramp has a lightly tamped finish to make it non-slip with the edges finished smooth with an edging trowel.
Bi-lateral galvanised rails were fitted with intermediate rails for safety.
Both sides have a gate at the bottom to allow access to front and rear gardens.
The left hand rail ascending runs the full length from door to road and at the gate has a small ramp to the side to allow the wheelie bins to be moved more easily.
The right hand rail ascending stops short of the top to allow easy access to the car and parking space.
