Using TIS helps to redistribute pressure away from risk areas, reducing the risk of pressure sores developing. It is therefore particularly useful for individuals who spend long periods of time in a seated position.

Physiological and Functional Improvements
TIS allows the user's position to be varied throughout the day, so that they benefit from both:

an upright position which improves breathing, swallowing and digestion, hygiene and social interaction. The potential benefits include reduced infection-risk, as well as improved comfort and psychological well-being.
a reclined position which assists venous return and helps reduce ankle swelling and the risk of venous ulceration.

Safety

Some users are at risk of slipping down and potentially falling out of their chair. A reclined TIS position makes this less likely without the need for physical restraint.
