What Are Grab Rails and Stair Rails?

Grab rails and stair rails are fixed supports designed to provide something solid to hold on to while using stairs.

Stair Rails

Stair Rails are installed along staircases, usually parallel to the stairs. Traditional handrails fitted along one side and are available in a range of lengths, finishes and profiles to suit domestic interiors.

Extra rails can be installed where existing handrails are inadequate and can be particularly useful on narrow or steep staircases.

Outside Rails

Weather‑resistant rails (often made of galvanised steel) are suitable for outdoor steps and entrances.

Newell Rails
A newel rail is a type of grab rail designed to support safe movement around corners on a staircase or landing. It is a short, curved rail that wraps around a newel post (the upright post you find at the bottom, top or turning point on stairs). Therefore a newel rail provides continuous hand contact, offering improved grip and stability even when the stairs change direction.

Grab Rails

Grab Rails are shorter rails positioned at key points , where they can help users steady themselves. They are commonly installed:

- at the top or bottom of stairs
- on landings or next to steps
