Why Choosing the Correct Ramp Matters What to Look For

When selecting a ramp, attention to detail matters. Here are the key factors we consider at Fortuna before recommending a ramp:

  • Height to overcome - the vertical rise (e.g. doorstep or step height) determines the ramp length needed for a safe useable  gradient.

  • Length & gradient - A gentler slope (lower gradient) is easier and safer to use, especially for manual wheelchair users, but this will need more space. We balance gradient vs. available space to find the best solution.

  • Surface & slip resistance — Ramps should have anti-slip surfaces and often chequered-plate or gripped finishes to ensure safe traction for wheelchairs, scooters and walking aids - especially outdoors or in wet conditions.

  • Load capacity - It is vital the ramp supports the user’s weight plus wheelchair or scooter load; many good ramps support 300-400 kg or more. This is especially important for powerchairs and scooters.

  • Width & usability - For wheelchair or scooter access, ramps must be wide enough for safe passage. In tight spaces, narrower “channel” ramps may work; for regular use, wider, full-width ramps are preferable.

  • Handrails, edging and safety features - Handrails significantly improve safety and confidence for ambulant users while raised edges help prevent wheels slipping off the ramp - modular systems often include these as optional extras.

  • Compliance & suitability for setting - Especially for public buildings or rented accommodation, ramp installations should meet relevant accessibility standards. Our modular ramp systems are designed to comply with building/accessibility regulations.

  • Durability & recyclability - High-quality ramps should be robust, weather-resistant, and where possible recyclable or reusable (this is especially important for housing associations, local authorities, or when long-term use is expected). Most of our ramps are UK made and provide excellent durability and the option of re-cycling.
