FAQs - Wheelchairs

Q. What are the different types of wheelchair?

A. Here is a summary of the most common types of wheelchair

  • Transit - these have small wheels and have to be pushed by someone else.
They are also sometimes known as Attendant wheelchairs.
  • Transport - these wheelchairs are also pushed, but have very small wheels and are usually made from steel so they can be heavier. These are not usually as durable as Transit wheelchairs and are best for occasional use.
  • Self-propelled (self-propelling) wheelchairs have larger wheels and allow the user to power themselves using the rims on the wheels. Although most can also be pushed, they are not as well suited to this as a Transit wheelchair.
  • Tilt-in-space wheelchairs. These are usually Transit but can also be Self-propelled. These wheelchairs are generally larger and heavier than other wheelchairs but are more comfortable because they can be tilted back into a semi-recumbant position and come with more cushioning. They are particularly suited for people who will be using them for several hours a day and those with more significant medical issues.
  • Active (Bespoke) (Made to Measure) (Prescriptive) wheelchairs are designed for users who have leg weakness but are otherwise fit and active. These are usually ultra-lightweight self-propelled and designed to the user's exact requirements.
  • Powerchairs (Powered wheelchairs) have an electric motor which allows the user to control the wheelchair.

At Fortuna, we can help with any of these options.

Q. Are Fortuna's wheelchairs foldable?

A. Our everyday Transit and Self-propelled wheelchairs are all easily foldable making them to transport.
More specialist wheelchairs (Tilt-in-space, Active, Powerchairs) are generally not foldable, but we can advise on the best solutions for your particular needs.

Q. Are Fortuna's wheelchairs lightweight?

A. All our standard Transit and Self-propelled wheelchairs are made of lightweight aluminium. We sell a range of wheelchairs, each with particular features to suit different clients needs. Some, like our 'Amalfi'  are particulary light making them very easy to lift.

Other wheelchairs include:

  • Active, bespoke, wheelchairs are designed to be ultra-lightweight.
  • Our Transport wheelchair is made of steel and therefore a little heavier than Transit wheelchairs.
  • Tilt-in-space and powered wheelchairs which are heavier and therefore more difficult to transport.

Q. What is the warranty on Fortuna wheelchairs?

A. All our non-powered wheelchairs come with a 1 year warranty.
