Restoring Confidence on the Stairs: A Bespoke Handrail Project

Recently, we were contacted by P, who had suffered a fall while going downstairs. The experience left her injured, shaken, and increasingly unsteady on the stairs. Like many people in similar situations, she initially approached the local council for support. While they were able to offer a basic handrail installation, the option available was functional and didn’t complement her home’s existing décor or fittings.

Wanting something safe and more in keeping with her home P. contacted us. We arranged for our surveyor, Mahmud, to visit and assess the staircase. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution, Mahmud brought a wide range of handrail styles, finishes, and fittings to discuss on the day.

He was able to carefully match the existing dark oak finish of P’s staircase, using a varnished stain that blended seamlessly with her current woodwork. After providing detailed advice and sending a clear quotation, P was happy to move forward.

A Bespoke Installation:

This was not a standard handrail installation. P specifically requested gold fixings, end caps and mitred joints at the middle landing to create a smooth, continuous transition along the staircase. Mitring requires precise measurement and craftsmanship to achieve a seamless look.

Working together, Mahmood and our technician Steve completed the installation to an exacting standard. The finished result was:

● A custom dark oak–stained wooden handrail
● Gold caps and fixings for a refined finish
● Mitred joints across two landings for a continuous flow
● A design that complemented the existing staircase perfectly

The handrail now blends in naturally with the stairs as if it had always been there.
